Video Portrait: “A Girl and Her Garden”

In a “Video Portrait” I capture the essence of who someone is and set it to music that would be in that person’s life soundtrack.

In this case I have the lovely Laura: she’s a native Texan, loves records, country, growing things, and has a knack for nostalgia. This film tells the story of who she is. Enjoy.

If you care about the geeky film stuff, keep reading.

I wanted to make a short film that showcases not only my style of cinematography and editing, but also the equipment I use.

This was shot using a Canon HV40 with a Jag35Pro 35mm lens adaptor, and a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens.

I love shooting with a prime lens. There’s something to be said about composition and perspective when you don’t have the ability to zoom in and out on your subject.

This was a challenging project because I didn’t know what music I would use or how I would tell the story… no storyboards or scripting. I just shot it with the intent of building my story in the edit. It took me 2 days to find the right song and once I started the edit I knew I didn’t have enough footage, which meant revisiting the shoot. Fortunately I was working with one patient (and beautiful) woman.

The color balance between the two days of footage was completely different, but I was able to mostly correct that. I also added some overall grading, but not too heavily.

Overall I am very well pleased with how this turned out.

Song: “Gypsy Rose” by Ben Kweller.

A Girl & Her Garden (pre-production)

Here’s another little pre-production post for you…

I wanted to make a fun little montage video showcasing the great footage that my camera rig captures.  I thought, “what better subject than the sweetest girl I know?”.

Her name is Laura and she loves her garden.  She lives in a little apartment with a roof porch.  I built her a standing garden a few years ago and now that has grown into many plant pots and other containers.

Video Portrait of Art Louis (pre-production)

Currently I’m shooting a video portrait for Louis Fronkier who is a local photographer.  I’ve got some great studio shots as well as some great B-roll from one of his photo session, which was down at Yorktown Beach.

Here’s a couple of stills from the video footage.  You can click on them to see a higher resolution image.  It’s been a bit of a mental adjustment for me to get into an HD workflow – it’s less forgiving when you make mistakes – but it’s so well worth it.  Final video coming soon!

Sofia’s People

This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark II using a single prime lens (Zeiss 50mm f1.4).  There’s no lighting, no grading, and it’s all hand-held.  It shows you the importance of composition in shooting over fancy zooms and dolly moves.  I love it… I would marry it.

The Human Experience

Here’s a film that I anticipate seeing. Not only is the storyline compelling, but the cinematography looks stellar!

The Human Experience – Trailer

Face of Fox

Fox43, which is a local TV station was looking for a talented individual to represent their online distribution.  They call it the “Face of Fox” and my good friend Jonathan Frank was a contestant.

He edited this video but I handled the camera on all the outdoor shots – the “director of photography”, if you will.  Enjoy.

You Have a Choice

This is a video that I made for a contest. It’s a short documentary style video about the choice that women/families have in their birthing. There were some guidelines that had to be followed, namely keeping it to 7 minutes. I think it came out pretty decent.

I setup the studio with a black backdrop and used a Panasonic DVX-100a with a MXL 990 mic. I was in such a rush I forgot to do my 24P pulldown on capture, but I was able to compensate with some deinterlacing in post.

A Thousand Words

This is one of the most stunning pieces that I’ve seen on the internet.

It’s directed by Peter Chung who describes the video with “Every day: so many opportunities to connect… What if you took just one?”

We’re Public!

Well, won’t you look at that?! Oh, well I guess you already are… I’m talking about the Goodrich Creative website, that is.

We don’t have any content yet, seeing as we’re a new company and all, but that will change soon.

Send us your clients! I’m talking about your weddings, your pregnant women, your events, commercials — basically any and everything that needs a video.

Trust me, you’ll love our stuff. See you soon.
